Studio painting allows me to focus on the subject, take my time, and revisit it. It’s quiet, meditative, challenging, but a little safe. There’s always tomorrow.

Then there is plein air. It forces me to recognize that the planet is always moving forward, changing light and my surroundings. I’m hungry and thirsty and need to find a place to pee. I’m either too hot or too cold or too wet or too dry. But I move forward until time runs out.
